Exploring and Building Leadership

This statement of General George S. Patton Junior, prepared and circulated by Pyramid College; tells us to stay positive and proceed to achieve goals with determination.

It's must to follow our passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, we shouldn't let anyone limit our dreams. 

Leaders are known for moral values, ethical conduct, and their qualities. Before exploring the leadership qualities in self and building the same, it's must to understand a fundamental difference between "ego" and "rite". Remember - A person full of ego is pleased by bowing (down) to others, while A person full of rituals and moral values, becomes happy to honor himself by bowing down. 

It's fact that a tree with more fruits than its capacity face the problem of breaking of its branches die to heavy load of fruits. In real life, if a person gets more than his capacity to absorb, he also starts doing wrong deeds, be egostic and even start breaking relationships with others. We must remember to stay cool and build our absorbing power so that God can give us more as per enhanced capacities. The tree having more fruits than its capacity and broken branches, soon be deprived of getting fruits in future, similarly a person with full of ego and broken relationships start falling in harmonious relationships with others.  

Who is a leader?

A leader is identified by his followers, without followers, a person cannot be called a leader. How to make followers? How to take work from others? What are the tools used for effective and dynamic leadership? These all issues are the managerial issues everyone face in life. Becoming a leader is not so easy, it requires exploring leadership skills and try to inculcate the same in self. In order to become a good leader, one should follow the following equation:

(a) Leadership Styles:

(i) Types of Leadership Styles:

Everyone should understand various types of leadership styles used around the world. A few of them are as under:

1)       Autocratic leadership

It is used where the leader has absolute power over his or her employees or team. Employees and team members have little opportunity for making suggestions, even if these would be in the team or organization’s interest. Autocratic leadership usually leads to high levels of absenteeism and staff turnover. For some routine and unskilled jobs, the style can remain effective where the advantages of control outweigh the disadvantages.

2)       Bureaucratic leadership

Bureaucratic leaders work “by the book”, ensuring that their staff follows procedures exactly. This is a very appropriate style for work involving serious safety risks (such as working with machinery, with toxic substances, or at heights) or where large sums of money are involved (such as cash-handling).

3)       Charismatic leadership

When a leader injects huge doses of enthusiasm into his or her team, and is very energetic in driving others forward. However, a charismatic leader tends to believe more in him- or herself than in their team. This can create a risk that a project, or even an entire organization, might collapse if the leader were to leave. In the eyes of their followers, success is tied up with the presence of the charismatic leader. As such, charismatic leadership carries great responsibility, and needs long-term commitment from the leader.
It's truly said, "बुद्धिमान वह नहीं है जो अधिक पढ़ा लिखा है । बुद्धिमान वह है जो इस कला को जानता है कि कब किससे किन शब्दों और कैसी शैली में बात करनी है।"

4)       Democratic leadership or Participative leadership

A Democratic Leader invites other members of the team to contribute to the decision-making process. This not only increases job satisfaction by involving employees or team members in what’s going on, but it also helps to develop people’s skills. As participation takes time, this approach can lead to things happening more slowly, but often the end result is better. The approach can be most suitable where team working is essential, and quality is more important than speed to market or productivity.
Democracy is decentralisation of Power. Perhaps more unsettling is the wealth of evidence that having power makes people more likely to act like sociopaths. High-power individuals are more likely to interrupt others, to speak out of turn, and to fail to look at others who are speaking. They are also more likely to tease friends and colleagues in hostile, humiliating fashion. 

5)       Laissez-faire leadership

This French phrase means “leave it be” and is used to describe a leader who leaves his or her colleagues to get on with their work. Most often, laissez-faire leadership works for teams in which the individuals are very experienced and skilled self-starters.

6)       People-oriented leadership or Relations-Oriented leadership

Where the leader is totally focused on organizing, supporting and developing the people in the leader’s team. A participative style, it tends to lead to good teamwork and creative collaboration. In practice, most leaders use both task-oriented and people-oriented styles of leadership.

7)       Servant leadership

A leader who is often not formally recognized as such. When someone, at any level within an organization, leads simply by virtue of meeting the needs of his or her team, he or she is described as a “servant leader”. Supporters of the servant leadership model suggest it is an important way where values are increasingly important, in which servant leaders achieve power on the basis of their values and ideals. Others believe that in competitive leadership situations, people practicing servant leadership will often find themselves left behind by leaders using other leadership styles.

8)       Task-oriented leadership

A highly task-oriented leader focuses only on getting the job done, and can be quite autocratic. He or she will actively define the work and the roles required, put structures in place, plan, organise and monitor.

9)       Transactional leadership

This style of leadership starts with the idea that team members agree to obey their leader totally when they take on a job: the “transaction” is (usually) that the organization pays the team members in return for their effort and compliance. You have a right to “punish” the team members if their work doesn’t meet the pre-determined standard. The leader could give team members some control of their income/reward by using incentives that encourage even higher standards or greater productivity.

10)  Transformational leadership:

A person with this leadership style is a true leader who inspires his or her team constantly with a shared vision of the future. Transformational leaders are highly visible, and spend a lot of time communicating. They tend to delegate responsibility amongst their team.

11)  Situational leadership

A good leader will find him- or herself switching instinctively between styles according to the people and work they are dealing with. This is often referred to as “situational leadership”. For example, the manager of a small factory trains new machine operatives using a bureaucratic style to ensure operatives know the procedures that achieve the right standards of product quality and workplace safety. The same manager may adopt a more participative style of leadership when working on production line improvement with his or her team of supervisors.

(ii) Adoption of Leadership Styles:

From Mahatma Gandhi to Jack Welch and Martin Luther King to Rudolph Giuliani, there are as many leadership styles as there are leaders. Whether you are managing a team at work, captaining your sports team or leading a major corporation, your leadership style is crucial to your success. Understanding these leadership styles and their impact can help you develop and adapt your own leadership style and so help you become a more effective leader.

(b) Discovering, Building, and Sustaining Leadership Qualities:

Do you want to be a highly effective leader? Do you want to develop the self-confidence, vision, wisdom, motivational impact and delivery skills that the most effective leaders have? And do you want to be the person to whom, quite naturally, other people turn for direction? What to do for discovering, building, and sustaining leadership qualities? The following steps are usually used by the people for becoming an effective leader and the same may be followed in life:
Ø  Create a reliable, robust and attractive vision of the future that people will respect and believe in (meaning that they'll enthusiastically follow your lead);
Ø  Communicate your vision, and see the benefits as people work to the best of their abilities to complete the projects you initiate successfully;
Ø  Grow your self-confidence, becoming a calm and self-confident leader, and one who inspires confidence in others;
Ø  Build a reputation for expertise and a track record of achievement that teams members and your peers will come to respect, value and trust;
Ø  Make good decisions under pressure, with the confidence that you’ve done the homework needed for these decisions to be right;
Ø  Build a strong, flexible and highly effective team, expanding your ability to deliver many times over;
Ø  Develop the sureness of touch shown by the best leaders, and learn to build the empathic, mutually trusting relationships needed for maximum team performance;
Ø  Enjoy mutually rewarding, co-operative working relationships with team members and peers. And enjoy the happy, energizing atmosphere that comes with this;
Ø  Keep people on target and performing well together in a “firm but fair way” that gets the job done while respecting the rights of team members;
Ø  Learn to inspire and motivate team members so that they'll "go to the ends of the Earth" to give their very best;
Ø  Become a truly inspirational leader, and enjoy the perks that come with this.

(c) Leadership Tools:

The leadership tools are those personality traits and behavioral aspects which are noticed in most of the leaders; recognized as best support to a person for becoming an effective leader:

Ø  Empower the subordinates to think like leaders themselves:

Great leaders don’t just lead by example; they know when and where to delegate. They respect their skills and competencies to fulfill their work. They monitor, motivate, scale up goals, give ideas and direction of others to succeed in life. They prefer working relationships instead of personal relationships.

Ø  Talent Hunt followed by building skills of newcomers:

The leaders hire best from the market of job-seekers and provide sufficient training to build others’ skills in the working environment. They make others responsible with providing proper authority to complete the tasks.

Ø  Be more creative and innovative:

The leaders require to become creative and innovative constantly in each function they perform. This personality trait makes them different and they sustain themselves with focusing upon their Strengths and Weaknesses, keeping eyes upon opportunities and threats.  In other words, with SWOT analysis, they not only improve their capacities and competencies but also expand the organizational activities.

Ø  Make Vishnu’s symbols your management tools:

There are four symbols of lord Vishnu i.e. Shankh, Chakra, Gada, and Lotus. First, the Shankh of conchshell trumpet, is used to announce their presence in the organization. The team or followers must know- who he is, what are his capabilities, what is his vision, and what he expects from his followers to perform, and why, and how this will help in achieving his final objective. Second, the Chakra, works as both a weapon and a symbol of life. A leader use it as a symbol of review and he reviews his followers’ progress or organization’s progress through organizing regular meetings on daily basis or weekly, monthly basis etc. With these meetings, he ensures regular checks what has been done and also keep attention on the overall aim. He ensures that the team has not drifted from the goal. Third, the Gada i.e. Mace is used as teacher’s ruler, to punish those who do not do what they are supposed to do. Fourth, the Lotus which is rich with nectar and attracts bees and butterfly, is a symbol which reminds him to award the people who do what they are supposed to do.

Ø  Think positive:

Thinking positive make the leader able to take accurate decisions for being proceeded in the right direction.

Ø  Advisory approach/give them a place to go:

A leader is well aware that a person with a place to go (promotion chances) always work hard and sustain for the welfare of the organization. He always adopts advisory approach and shows followers a place to go for keeping them engaged throughout their life.

Ø  Provide positive workplace culture:

The positive workplace culture includes motivation, productivity, quality work, retention etc. A leader ensures positive workplace culture at the workspace and helps in building positive attitude towards the company/organization.

Ø  Behave as a friend not as a boss/ Genuine helping hand to everyone:

A leader most of the time use his emotions and behave like a friend instead of a boss. He tried to make favors whenever required i.e. keep genuine helping hand ready for the followers. Let’s recall ‘Pyar ki Ghappi’ in the hindi movie ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ to make others convinced to follow leader. A leader well knows that a human touch makes a person bright in others’ eyes and he use for taking work from others.

Parents in nurturing Children

The children are dependent upon the family, friends, teachers, and society to learn good or bad things. They are innocent. The primary duty of parents is to look after and inculcate good values and make them successful. 
"In childhood whatever we learn, that make our characters for which we are be known in the society. It's very difficult to change habits. Therefore the children require more focus of parents to move in right direction". 
Parents in nurturing Children
During the times of lockdown, the schools were closed and most of the time of children spent with the parents because the parents were also not going to their duties in the offices / shops / businesses. The nature forced parents to spare quality time for the children, and most of the parents learned how to involve the children in various creative activities without giving them school books to learn. Earlier, when there was no lockdown, it was not possible to devote more time for the children.
The word antakshari and the blocks game were used to improve the creativity of the children. 
Whenever a child grows he usually does work as per his choice and the work which is hard in nature, is performed either by the parents or the work not done. The nature of a child for not taking the hard work done by himself; creates laziness and that laziness performs great role in his life. He starts fear of doing hard work and due to undue favour of parents, such laziness increases. How to reduce laziness, that becomes a challenge? The parents hope from child to be succeed but at the same time, the ways for self-growth are also not provided. What are the solutions and how parents and mentors can work to make a lazy person work to grow professionally?

Inspiring to do instead of wrong work:

The children should be inspired to do their work themselves even if they are doing wrong work. In case, they are not inspired, they will start getting their work done from the parents or friends and such habit will make them dependent. Therefore, it is must neither to do their work nor make them get their work done from the friends instead of this, inspire them to get their work themselves. In case, their start weeping or it becomes hard to make them work themselves, it is must to inspire and motivate. For this purpose, they may be offered any monetary or non-monetary reward but be careful, they should not be made habitual of taking such rewards for each work.

Reduce and remove the Fear of failure:

Most of the children even after being grown, feel fear of failure. It is usual and the fear of failure can be settled only with practising the work again and again. It is well popular proverb, “Practice makes a man perfect” and it should be adopted to deal fear of failure. The fear of failure also creates negativity and due to such negativity sometimes chances of being failure increased to a great extent. The practice of doing a work again and again develops the confidence and the fear of failure and negativity both are settled. It is the duty of parents to provide them opportunity and enough time to practice the things, the children are fear of.

Developing positive attitude:

It is must to encourage children whenever they are confident of doing things right. It will develop their positive attitude and they will perform the things with passion. Never doubt upon them and make them fear of doing anything you think they cannot. However, at the same time it is must to supervise their activities but not by restricting them to act positively. In case, any work is performed in undesirable manner, it is must to handle them with care because children are less habitual to listen. In such cases, it is must to tell them stories to inspire for doing right things in right manner.

Inculcate habit of doing hard work:

The children should be provided hard work to do. In starting, it is must to develop the habit to perform the tasks and self-learning from each task. They should be trained to learn from the things by inspiring and motivating them. Thereafter, the work should be increased and start giving more motivational support so that they become confident of doing hard work to get everything at their own. It will also develop their positive attitude towards getting the things done through hard work instead of exploring shortcut methods of doing the things.
एक छोटी सी कहानी

कभी किसी पंछी को देखा है? जब उसे अंडे देने होते है तो वो सर्वप्रथम एक स्थान खोजता है। एक स्थान जो वर्षा, धूप, शत्रुओं से सुरक्षित हो फिर वो अपना घोंसला बनाता है फिर अंडे देता है और फिर जब उन अण्डों से नन्हीं संतानें निकल आती है तो उन्हें भोजन देता है, उनकी सुरक्षा करता है परन्तु जब उनके पंख निकल आये तो ना उन्हें भोजन देती है ना ही उन्हें घोंसला बनाना सिखाती है।

केवल एक ही कला सिखाती है बस फिर वो नन्हीं संतानें उड़ने की कला सीख कर अपना भोजन लाना सीख जाते है स्वयं घोंसला बनाना सीख जाते है और हम मनुष्य क्या करते है?
संतान के बड़े होने के पश्चात भी उनकी चिंता में सूखते है, प्रयास करते है कि उनके लिए घर बना सके। संतान को और भी शक्तिशाली बनाने के स्थान पर पंगु कर जाते है।

जीवन में वही कीजिये जो एक पंछी करता है अपनी संतान को उड़ने की कला सिखाइये, संस्कार दीजिये और एक समय के पश्चात उसे स्वयं अपना आकाश चुनने को मुक्त कर दीजिये।  


A small story

Ever seen a bird? When she has to lay eggs, she firstly finds a place that is protected from rain, sun, enemies; then builds its nest, then lays eggs and then feeds them. After few time, when the babies come out of those eggs, she trains them to fly. Thereafter, their wings come out and the bird mother stops to feed them and  not teaches them to make their own nest.


Only one art is taught that the art of flying and make them learn to bring their own food, they themselves learn to nest.  What do we humans do?

Even after the children grow up, we worry to build a house for them. Instead of making the children more powerful, we feed forever.

Shouldn't we do the same in life as a bird, teach our children the art of flying, give moral values and art of facing challenges of life, after a time, let the children be free to choose their own sky.

Never demoralize the children:

The children sometimes demand higher rewards for doing work and sometimes become lazy in performing their duties. The parents should never demoralize the children by stating the examples of other children doing work at time. The parents should never appreciate others to make children feel guilty. Then what to do when a child is not doing work in desired manner? Here counselling work better than making them demoralized. Ask the children why they are not doing work and try to know their problem first. They may hesitate to state the problem and even sometimes unable to express their problems; in such case it is must to observe their problems and come with a solution to the problems. Demoralizing children and appreciating others to make them feel guilt; leads to creation of negative attitude and they start thinking negatively with a doubt upon their abilities. This hinders their professional growth.

Reduce their hesitation by developing social skills:

The children are usually remained stuck in doing school work and then home work; thereafter sleep to wake up early morning. Such schedule never provides them opportunity to learn the social skills. In holidays, it is the duty of parents to guide the children and inculcate social values to express their thoughts, speak confidently, to reduce their hesitation in speaking and expressing their problems. Either company them by becoming child with them or make them have a company of good friends to grow. Always be attentive that they should not have company of bad children and it they have, either try to break such company or try to inculcate values in such bad friends so that your child not affected from them.

Inculcating leadership and team building habits:

The children at the time of their play or game activities should be instructed to frame teams while doing the tasks of play. It is must to supervise and instruct them at least once a week so that they got opportunity to copy you in doing their activities. Never force them to stay separate in performing their play or game activities indeed inspire them to build teams and they do the desired tasks. It will make them either to lead others or cooperate others to get success. Both habits will inculcate leadership and team building skills. The children may also be provided some work to perform and give them a target for getting the desired reward.

Group activities to reduce hesitation of public speaking:

The children should play in groups by making a monitor or leader. Further, they should also be provided opportunity to address in the group and speak confidently in each role they are playing. The group activities reduce the hesitation and their fear of speaking confidently also removed to a great extent. Instruct children to maintain eyes contact at the time of speaking or discussing with them. In case, any child is not making the eyes contact, then he requires more attention and it is must to give more activities to him for reducing his hesitation.

Fix time of using mobiles, computers and other gadgets:

The children are being addicted of using electronic things and it also affect their health very adversely. The parents should fix the time of using such electronic things and supervise that they are using it for good purposes and not getting bad company through using such means of communication. The Facebook friends, the ideas shared on electronic devices also affect significantly in changing the thought process of children, therefore, it is must to ensure that the children are not being addicted of such electronic things.

True Fact:

खुद में झाकने के लिए जिगर चाहिए जनाब, दूसरों में बुराई बताने में तो हर शख्स माहिर होता है..

It's very easy to find faults in others, the real strength is to identify bad evils in self and leave the vices. 

A small story on morality in Children:

This is about an incident, a car came in the market and in the car, a lady Seema asked her daughter Ravina to go outside and purchase vegetables. Ravina went outside to a shop  and asked to give vegetables. After taking vegetables, she asked price. The shopkeeper Ramesh told to give Rs. 40. Ravina threw a note of Rs. 100 and come back in the car. 
After sitting in the car when the car started to move, suddenly a small girl Manisha knocked the mirror of the car. Manisha handed over Rs. 60 and politely told that it was remaining out of the amount of Rs. 100 paid for buying vegetables. Seema sitting inside the car told Manisha to keep the money and no need to pay back. But Manisha politely replied that the Rs. 60 are remaining and it belongs to Ravina who paid Rs. 100 instead of Rs. 40. 
Manisha with folded hands, returned to shop of her father. Seema impressed from the behavior of Manisha and went to the shop of Ramesh, who was selling vegetables. After looking at Seema, Ramesh feared and asked his daughter Manisha whether she returned the money Rs. 60 with respect or not. Manisha said, "Papa Ji, I know and remember the moral values you put in me that never insult others, always talk with respect and respect elders. Papa Ji, now I have to go to school for study, I will come back in afternoon, kindly allow me."
Seema was feeling ashamed on the behavior of Ravina after looking at the polite behavior and moral values of Manisha. 
The moral of this incident is that the parents should inculcate moral values instead of giving freedom to their children. Make children respect humanity, brotherhood, civilization, good conduct, sweetness in speech etc.

Learn and Contribute More

It is well said, "मैं सब जानता हूँ.. यही सोच इंसान को कुएँ का मेंढक बना देती है". Everyone learns throughout the life and one should keep mind open to learn new things.

       

Every Organization is committed to realize success by attaining its goals. It is rightly said that Success is being content, happy and satisfied with who we are, and continuously striving and challenging ourself to be the best person we can be. 

Training boosts Happiness Levels:

Whenever a person participates in any training program and start learning, unlearning, and relearning the knowledge and skills useful to perform better in workplaces, it increases happiness level. Training helps in building and maintaining social relationships. The participants feel they are undergoing self-improvement and exercising their participatory skills, ‘citizen flow’, thereby bolstering happiness levels. 

Assessing performance of training organizations:

There are plenty of organizations involved in providing training to the students, employees, animals, and birds. Everyone requires to assess their own performance and like to know their contribution. Merely a positive statement cannot justify their contribution. The assessment of money spent, the evaluation of outcomes arrived, and the figures of change in the whole situation requires a lot of effort. How to do such evaluation which can be seen as fair evaluation in the eyes of participants, client organization, sponsoring organization, and even for the trainers themselves. 

Filling Competency Gaps:

A trainer is expected to identify the Competency Gaps and fill the same through organizing training. The performance is increased and the organization be capable enough to fight competition and defeat other organizations. Let recall a statement: 

"When we know the enemy and we know our self, we need not fear the result of a hundred battles. When we know ours elf but not the enemy, for every victory gained we will also suffer a defeat. If we know neither the enemy nor our self, we will succumb in every battle, therefore read the adversities clearly, completely and be committed in life to perform - Good or Bad, let TIME decide..."

The contribution of training can be evaluated on various parameters.

Always remember,"जूनून आदमी से वो करवा लेता है जो वह नहीं कर सकता । हौंसला आदमी से वो करवाता है जो वह कर सकता है। परन्तु अनुभव उससे वही करवाता है जो वास्तव में उसे करना चाहिए !!"

It matters when an Employee is not adding value to an Employer:

The future is related to more use of machines, gadgets, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, etc. The time has come to replace the most of the work with robots. Why?

The robots can perform better in many aspects because they cannot do strike for demanding anything employer is not giving. They don't require tea or lunch breaks. They need not to be absent after office hours and can work consistently for giving high performance. 

The employees who are not adding values to the employers, soon be replaced with the robots. The robots are not competitors to the employees. If an employee is doing less in terms of generating revenues and a robot is capable to do more work with less cost as compared to the employee, he/she will be replaced with the robot/s or machines. This is the lesson everyone has to understand. The jobs are no more for the employees without potential to add value in an organisation. Gone are the days when it was not possible to find alternative to a person's work. Today it is required to be responsible and lead life with gratitude.

Learn Honesty from a short story

He had not told his mother that he was the Railway Minister.

 It was said that "I work in railways".

 He had once come to some program when his mother also came there asking if my son has also come, he is also in the railways. When people asked what is the name, when she told the name, everyone was shocked " said she is lying".

 But she said, "No, he has come".

People took him in front of Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri and asked, "Is he the same?"

So the mother said "yes he is my son"

People showed her to the minister and said "is she your mother?"

Then Sh. Shastri ji respectfully took his mother and made her sit with him and after some time sent her to the home from where she came.

Then the journalists asked "why didn't you give a speech in front of her?"

He said- My mother does not know that I am a minister.  If she comes to know, she may start recommending people and I will not be able to refuse and she may also get arrogant too.

Everyone was stunned on hearing the answer. Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri was so much selfless, truthful, and honest person. I salute him from my heart.

Now-a-days, with the change in technology and new methods, new approaches, there is requirement to develop an app for making the whole process quantified through machines, computers, or robots. Firstly, explore the ideas and select one which can be transformed into an eBook. It is required to think again in detail of that idea, and chalk out what can be written in a particular order, to pass the learning on a specific topic or to narrate a case or to simplify anything difficult to understand or to tell a story in an interesting way etc. For example, the information about criticism for anything, can easily be found but why the things happen to be criticized, is not explained by authors, that is required to be pointed out. When I am asked to write my first book, I opted a title on which information is nowhere easily available i.e. Trainer's guide to Evaluation of Training

2.                 Gathering data or relevant information: 

It is must to firstly collect the data by reviewing literature so that the eBook cannot be proved as a repetition of already existing information. It is must to gather the relevant information from various sources including books, journals, magazines, and websites of great interest. After collecting the data, edit the same and frame useful information in an organized way to present in the form of eBook. At this stage, it is must to keep in mind, what are the requirements of target audience so that the eBook can easily be sold in the market. What will be the titles of chapters, titles of paragraphs and sub-paragraphs, order of each information, and finally structure of the eBook. 

3.                 Thinking and Writing: 

After finalizing the structure of the eBook and existing information in hand, the author should explore the intellect and put the same after deep thinking in a simple way to pass the knowledge. Some authors start writing from the first lesson, some start from the middle of the eBook, and some start writing from the last lesson to first; it depends upon the author’s desire. 

4.                 Review and rewrite: 

More the editing, more the useful information will be inside the eBook. It is must to review the written content again and again before finalizing it in the form of eBook. It is a never-ending process; however, the author may decide at which stage he launches the eBook’s final content. Revising the content as per the latest updates in the concerned area, is must to make the eBook useful. The content may be rearranged, revised, reframed, rewritten keeping in mind the need of the target audience.

5.                 Finalizing the touching title: 

The title of the eBook should be so touching and self-describing so that the readers or target audience be agreed after listening the title of the eBook to buy it. For example, “You Can Win” was a nice title and created interest in the mind of potential readers to have a copy of it.  

6.                 Adding attractive cover page: 

The cover page is the first look of the eBook and the success of the eBook depends to a great extent upon it. The attractive cover page itself is a marketing tool because it is firstly noticed by the readers. If possible, then hire a professional designer to design the cover page.

7.                 Testing the eBook’s content and seeking improvements: 

Before publishing the eBook, it is must to test it by offering it for review by the experts, potential readers, to have comments for the changes (if required). Beware, only offer the eBook to the confidential and trusted people so that it cannot go in the hands of someone who can steal the information and get it published. On the basis of feedback, the eBook can be improved before publishing. There is always scope for improvement, in case there is requirement to revise to a great extent, then it may be decided to revise it in the next edition.

8.                 Compiling the eBook and finding out keywords: 

It is must to describe the keywords from the content detailed inside the eBook. The keywords should be selected on the basis of both the requirements of the target audience and contents detailed inside the eBook.

9.                 Formatting the eBook: 

The formatting is must before publishing at an online platform i.e. KDP, Smashwords, Lulu etc. The formatting of an eBook is an art and requires learning. It can also be done by using a software.

10.             Selection of publishing platform: 

Once the manuscript or eBook’s content is ready to publish, it is required to select the appropriate publishing platform. It depends upon the target audience which publishing platform will be appropriate. In case, the target audience is computer savvy students then the eBook may be launched at Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and marketed at Amazon. On the other hand, if the target audience is senior and old people who prefer to read hard-copies, then it may be decided to launch the book in digital libraries with a copy in hard-paper to be sold in the market. The authors also consider the privacy protection, royalties offered by the publishing platform, and availability of the target audience before finalizing the publishing platform.

11.             Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP): 

The eBook is written and promoted mostly on Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) because it provides the feature of formatting the eBook and a marketplace without charging a single penny. The KDP also provides feature to read the eBook at Kindle. Nearly 70% of the price of each sold copy of eBook is provided to the author. But at this platform, it is must that the author’s target audience use Kindle for approaching the eBook.  

12.             Publishing platforms other than KDP: 

There are many other platforms for publishing the eBook i.e. Smashwords, Booktango, Lulu etc. Each platform accepts the manuscript and then publish it in the form of eBook. The interesting thing is that they don’t charge money for publishing it. However, they charge for editing and marketing the eBook. It is also necessary to go through the terms and conditions and look how much royalties each platform is providing for sale of each copy. At present, the Lulu is most appropriate in such case, offering up to 90% of the royalties.

13.              Self-publishing by using a specific software: 

There are software available for self-publishing an eBook, for example, Calibre software converts HTML files into ePub format without charging a single penny. If the content is available in the form of MS-Word document, then it is required to firstly save the .doc or .docx file into .html format and then convert it into an ePub format using Calibre software. Second software normally used for publishing eBook is Adobe Acrobat Pro version. It creates the .pdf file with protection through password. Only the users with password can read the contents of the .pdf file. Third software which can also save documents into .pdf with password is OpenOffice.org, an office suite freely available online. With the change in time, there are many options being available online and an author can opt any for publishing the eBook without paying a single penny.

14.             Promoting the eBook: 

After publishing the eBook, it becomes necessary for promoting the eBook to earn the revenues. The YouTube, FaceBook, Google Communities, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media platforms can be used to promote the eBook. The authors can also link the eBook on StumpleUpon and promote its picture through Instagram or YouTube Clips.    
In nut shell, firstly write contents of an eBook in MS-word document, then use OpenOffice.org to convert it into .pdf with encryption or password. The use Google Docs to convert it into a format ePub meant for eBook.
